Queen of Wands

By Katee Robert

This is the second book in the Sanctify series, and although I loved the first book, I enjoyed this one so much more.

The first book revolved around Boone and Ophelia and, although Jenny O'Keirna played a pretty big role in the first book, she is the major player in this second book.  This is her story, and what a fun story it is!  She was my favorite character in the first book, so I was absolutely thrilled to find out that we were getting a book completely devoted to her this time around.  I can imagine a whole series devoted to just Jenny, I really can!

I loved this book for several reasons.  This book is definitely sci-fi, but without being too complicated.  It has all the fun aspects of sci-fi (intergalactic travel, alien creatures, laser guns, stuff like that....) but without all the technical jargon and mumbo jumbo that so many books seem to have. I often lose interest when I'm reading sci-fi (even though it is my favorite genre) but not with this series..... but now back to this awesome book:

Jenny is an extremely likable heroine. She is tough, intelligent, snarky, and totally capable of exceeding everyone's expectations of herself.  Jenny is sharing in her brother's joy of welcoming a new baby girl into the family when a distress call comes in from Mac, an inventor who is currently employed as a weapons developer and is a highly valuable player in the war currently going on between Jenny's family and Sanctify, the evil bad boys who are hellbent on total interplanetary domination.  Getting their hands on Mac would seriously tip the scales in their favor, and Jenny just can't allow that to happen. She she volunteers to go pick up Mac and deliver him to one of his foxholes on some other planet. Easy Peasy, right? Oh, if only.......

The action in this series is non-stop.  It is fast moving and so much fun! With Sanctify constantly on their heels, Jenny is determined to prove to her big brother (and the rest of her team) that she is perfectly capable of successfully rescuing Mac and delivering him safely to his little hidey hole.  The attraction between Jenny and Mac is pretty much immediate, but it takes them a little while to actually act upon that attraction and when they finally do...it is amazing!   Mac is the perfect compliment to Jenny...he is not the typical domineering Alpha male (which would never sit well with Jenny anyway.)  He is more like the "strong but silent" type, so to speak.  He is secure enough to allow Jenny to take the lead when necessary, yet always there to back her up as well.  He is a typical geeky hero who should not be underestimated simply because of his nerdish standing in society.   Plus, he's just a nice guy!

Even though this is the second book in the series, it stands well all on its own.  Everything is explained along the way, and although I highly recommend reading the first book simply because it is a great book worth reading, you won't have any trouble understanding what's going on if you coose to read this book first.  This is a fast, fun, well written story and I am already looking forward to book three in this series!!

Love Potions

By: Michelle M. Pillow

This book was a ton of fun to read!  The plot was interesting and moved along at a good pace.  The characters were entertaining and the MacGregor family was just downright hilarious! The pranks they played on each other kept me in stitches and I found myself rereading several sections of their immature antics, simply because I enjoy a good laugh. It's rare that I find a book that can actually make me laugh out loud, and watching how the MacGregor siblings interacted with each other (and sabotaged each other!) was refreshing and highly amusing!

Lydia is a great main character.  She is strong and independent and in control (to a certain degree, anyway) of her life. She owns her own business making various body lotions from the herbs in her own garden.  She has made a success of herself and she isn't going to let a little magick destroy all she has made for herself.  She's very down to earth and likable.  Her only employee is her best friend, Charlotte, whom she respects and cares for like a sister. It's a great relationship and the two women keep each other grounded in the midst of all the evil that begins to happen around them.  It is very touching to see how Lydia cares for Charlotte when Charlotte's sanity seems to start eroding.   And Lydia also has a good head on her shoulders when it comes tomher new sexy neighbor, Erik.  Erik is the leading man in all of Lydia's steamy fantasies, and yet Lydia still manages to maintain a respectable amount of self control around him when it really counts.

Erik is a likable enough character.  He's a bit domineering but, after centuries of going solo, he's a bit rusty when it comes to interacting with women.  So the reader needs to cut Erik a little bit of slack and be patient with his overbearing possessiveness as he learns how to be in a relationship.

Overall, I really liked this book a lot. It was well written and left no unanswered questions at the end, and I loved all the characters.  Lydia and Erik come to some excellent compromises in their relationship and the ending leave the possibility of a sequel.....(involving Charlotte and Euann I hope!)  I will be looking for more books by this author!

Queen of Swords

By: Katee Robert

In an effort to temporarily beat down some personal demons that had been haunting her after the tragic loss of her entire crew, Ophelia Leoni spends a drunken night with Boone O'Keirna....never expecting to see him after that night.  The following morning, she is summoned home and informed that she will be marrying Prince Kristian and a ship is already en route to pick her up to bring her to him.  Ophelia, a tarot card reading Diviner, sees in the cards that this is her destiny, so she reluctantly agrees to do what is required of her.  The cards never lie, and the last time she disobeyed a reading it cost her the lives of her entire crew. She is not about to make that same mistake again.  So when a ship arrives shortly thereafter -with Boone coming to take her away- she climbs on board, thinking Boone is going to take her to prince Kristian. Little does Ophelia realize that Boone is actually there to kidnap her.

What I liked about this story:  I don't often read sci-fi novels, as so many of them tend to be a bit unbalanced for my liking...but this book was nicely balanced. There was drama and romance, good character and plot development and the story moves along at a nice pace. There was a healthy blend of various alien races and planetary travel without being overbearing and complicated. Overall, this was perfectly done in my opinion.

What I didn'tlike about this story:  I hate to admit this, but I really didn't like Ophelia.  She grated on my nerves and I found her stubborness to be more of a liability than an asset.  Normally I like my heroines to be tough and independent but Ophelia carried these qualities too far and, by the end of the book, I just wanted to bitch slap her.  I enjoyed Jenny so much more and found myself wishing she were the heroine, instead of Ophelia.  Also, there were a few loose ends that the author didn't tie up for the reader. Nothing major, but I still had a few lingering questions when I was done reading.  What eventually became of Gee? Was he released or did he go to trial? Was he ever reunited with his Marcy? How bad were Gerard's injuries? I'm *assuming* he survived, but it would have been nice to get a few more details about his injuries and his recovery.  These questions have absolutely nothing to do with the overall outcome of the story, but they still left me wondering.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It was fun and interesting to read and kept me entertained.

Saving His Mate

By: Savannah Stuart

Rex is a vampire bounty hunter who has approached Grant, the local werewolf alpha of the Kincaid wolf pack, to ask for Grant's permission to hunt a rogue vampire in Grant's territory.  Grant and Rex evidently go way back and are on friendly terms, so Grant gives Rex permission to hunt on his territory.  While Rex is in Grant's office, the beautiful werewolf Margery walks in and Rex is immediately smitten with her.  The problem is, Margery was attacked by a group of vampires when she was younger and was beaten to within an inch of her life. So whatever ideas Rex is entertaining about the beautiful Margery, he will have to entertain them alone, as Margery wants nothing to do with Rex.

Then, to Rex's surprise, Grant asks Rex to join his pack.  Grant's pack has several jaguar shifters in it, so why not add a vampire to the mix?  Yay for diversity!  Rex decides to mull over Grant's invitation for a little while, as joining Grant's pack would definitely give Rex easy access to Margery.  But does he want to be that close to Margery if he really doesn't stand a chance with her....?

Then Margery is kidnapped and all bets are off the table. Rex the bounty hunter is hot on her trail and determind to bring her back alive.

This was such an interesting idea for a story.  I love the Kincaid werewolf pack. There are a few jaguars  in the pack and Rex will soon join them.  It's an interesting mix and it really does work well.  The pack owns a condo building on the beach and each member of the pack has their own condo, complete with ocean view.  There is a real sense of camaraderie within the pack and the majority of them seem to accept Rex without question.  I enjoyed the overall vibe of the Kincaid pack.

My major complaint about this book is the lack of real action here. It's a good idea for a story, and the romance is there.....but the action is yawn inducing.  Margery is kidnapped, which is actually the most exciting part of this story.  And from that point on, all the "excitement" is just one convenient thing after another.....Margery manages to escape almost immediately from her shackles, one of her captors comes to an immediate and somewhat clean demise.....later followed by her other captor meeting a swift and clean end. There's no tension in this story, no real action.  The main thrill I get from reading vampire stories is the fighting. I love the action, I love the adventure. Sure, the romance is fun too, but I love the carnage associated with vampires and werewolves.  As much as I loved the idea for this story,  I was bored by the time I finished it.

Called by Fire

By: Delwyn Jenkins

This was an amazing story, full of action, mischief and sex.

Kamryn Vale is a Dahnen Witch whose element happens to be fire. She lives with her Quatre consisting of an Air Witch, an Earth Witch and a Water Witch.  They are the best of friends and the very definition of soul sisters.  They live together at the Collegium where they are approaching the end of their studies and hope to graduate soon. They are each powerful in their own right, but together they are a force to be reckoned with.

One day, while running from one of the Sentinal guards patrolling the hallways, Kam ducks into what appears to be a broom closet and comes face to face with an incredibly gorgeous guy taking a bath in what is basically a very large bucket.  His name is Alex and he is a Watchtower Knight, trained to defend and protect the Dahnen Witches with his very life.  He is hunky, naked, and immediately smitten with the lovely Fire Witch who has just invaded his privacy.  When the Sentinal comes knocking on the door looking for Kam, Alex agrees to deny ever seeing Kam in exchange for two kisses from her......two passionate kisses from her at the time and place of his choosing.  Let the magic begin....

From this moment on, the passion between Kam and Alex is explosive. Literally.  When things get too heated between them, she loses control of her element and accidentally sets things on fire. They do their best to work around this problem, as they have a much bigger fish to fry..... one Witch has been murdered, drained of her power and desecrated, and another Witch has gone missing.  The Watchtower Knights have been called in from a 200 year old exile to help in any way necessary.  Desperate times call for desperate measures! The Dahnen Witches will do whatever is necessary to find their missing friend, including teaming up with the Watchtower Knights (walking a fine line between what is actually sanctioned by the Collegium and what will get them permanently expelled) and combining the Witches' magic with the Knights' power to form a an *almost* impenetrable shield between themselves and the Dark Magic that is holding the missing Witch captive.

The action in this book is amazing! I loved reading about the world of the Dahnen Witches and their extremely protective Knights.  The author goes into so much depth about how the magic actually works and lets the reader come along as the Witches and the Knights set out on a dangerous and complicated rescue mission. This story was so well written and I had a hard time putting it down.

I did have a few issues with this story, though.  For me, the ending left some unanswered questions that are driving me crazy, to wit:

What happened with Tristan?  We got to know him and come to love him and then we aren't  even told what happens to him at the end.  Does he live? Does he die?  I want to know!

What is the Primus's reason for all the cover-ups?  They go to a lot of trouble to cover-up and change certain events in their history, but we don't know why.  They must have a reason for doing this......but I sure don't know what it is.

These questions could easily be explained in the next book, if it turns out that this will be a series.  I couldn't find any confirmation that this will be a series, though, so as far as I am concerned, these are simply unanswered questions that contribute to an incomplete ending.  Still, though, this was an excellent story that kept me thoroughly engaged to the very end.  I would LOVE to read another book about these Witches and Knights, but maybe focusing on a different Witch.....I can totally see Mycah and Sebastian hooking up in book two!

How to Seduce a Vampire (Without Really Trying)

By Kerrelyn Sparks

The team is back!!  This time it's Zoltan's turn to meet his match (and his mate!)  I love this series, and this book doesn't fail to disappoint. When Zoltan goes looking for answers regarding his father's death, his search leads him to a secret valley in Tibet where he meets Neona, who then proceeds to try to kill him. Zoltan and Neona make a strong (and hilarious!) couple as each of them tries to figure out if they can trust the other one.  And I thought it was a riot that Zoltan took such a ribbing back home because he got the crap beat out of him by a woman. LOL!

The characters in this book (as in the previous books) are well defined and feel like old friends at this point.  I love Howard and Elsa, they are my favorite couple in this series and it was fun to see so much of them in this book.

The attention to deail in this book is astonishing.  I love Neona's village and her way of life, so simple and detached from modern living.  Like previous books in this series, there is just enough humor mixed in with the typical battle scenes (anyone care for a "Hello Kitty" watch?? Ha! Ha!) to keep the story balanced.  And, of course, there are secrets.  Neona is hiding a doozie of a secret that will ultimately change Zoltan's fate as a vampire. I love what happens to Zoltan...perhaps vampires in future books will follow his example?  It is certainly a twist that I never saw coming and could possibly lead to a whole new direction for this series.  It will be interesting to see if the author expands on Zoltan's new situation in future books. I don't want to say too much about this, for fear of giving away too many spoilers.

The one thing I didn't like about this book is that we never learn of Xiao Fang's fate.  This was a major loose end for me and made the ending somewhat incomplete.  This book would have been a perfect 5 stars if the situation with Xiao Fang had been resolved. But as it is, this was still an excellent book.

My rating: 4.5 stars

Don't Bite the Bridesmaid

By: Tiffany Allee

This was a fun read and I finished it in no time.

Alice is in a bit of a bind....she is getting ready to go on a cruise for her sister's wedding, where she is sure to run into her ex-fiancé, Brent. And to make an awkward situation even more awkward, Brent will be on this cruise with his girlfriend, Kristen, who happens to be Alice's former best friend. Yes, they have been former friends ever since Alice walked in on Brent and Kristen in bed together. Whoops!

Enter Noah, hunky vampire extraordinaire. Noah is Alice's next door neighbor and he is being forced into an arranged marriage that he is desperately trying to get out of. Alice goes over to his house with the intent of trying to convince Noah to go on this cruise with her so she will not look like a loser in front of Brent. She has no idea Noah is a vampire. And she wants to bring him on a cruise ship. To sunny Mexico. What could possibly go wrong?

Noah decides to accompany Alice on this cruise so he can buy some time and come up with a plan to get out of his arranged marriage, and Alice now has a hunky piece of arm candy to parade around with in front of Brent and Kristen. It's a win-win situation for both of them until their feelings for each other start to get in the way.

This was a fun, lighthearted read. It is a quirky, well written story with lots of likable characters. Noah doesn't exhibit the stereotypical vampire traits that are in most of the books I read (he can go out in the sun, he just can't stay out for too long.....and thank God, he doesn't sparkle!) For all intents and purposes, he acts like a regular human who just happens to drink shampoo, err, I mean blood and he struggles with keeping his fangs in check when he's aroused. I really enjoyed this story and will soon be starting on the next book in this series.
